Telescopic handlers – which one to choose and for what? A comprehensive overview of applications from BAC Polska

Telescopic loaders are among the most versatile machines currently used in construction, agriculture, industry, logistics, and municipal services. Their greatest advantage is the ability to combine the functions of several different devices in one machine. Depending on the attachment used, a telescopic loader can operate as a forklift, a classic loader, a material handling machine, and in selected configurations, partially also as a small crane or work platform.

However, this does not mean that every telescopic loader is suitable for every task.

On the market, we will find both small, compact models with a lifting height of around 6 meters, typical agricultural machines of the 7-meter class, large construction loaders equipped with outriggers and booms with a length of several meters, as well as advanced rotating loaders capable of operating at heights exceeding 20 meters.

Therefore, when choosing a machine, it is not worth being guided solely by maximum lifting capacity or lifting height. Equally important are, among others, horizontal reach, lifting capacity with the boom extended, machine dimensions, chassis type, maneuverability, stabilization method, available attachments, and the nature of the work the loader will perform most of the time.

Below we look at the most important classes of telescopic loaders and show where individual designs perform best.

Compact telescopic loaders

The biggest advantage of compact telescopic loaders is that, in practice, they can replace several different machines: a forklift, a small wheeled loader, and in some tasks also partially a crane.

Compact telescopic loaders are the most popular choice in situations where versatile machine for transporting, loading, and lifting materialsis required, but a larger loader would be too heavy, too large, or insufficiently maneuverable.

One of the most popular configurations in this class consists of machines offering approximately 2,5 t lifting capacity and a lifting height of up to 6 m. This combination of parameters is sufficient for a wide variety of daily tasks, while simultaneously allowing the overall machine dimensions to remain compact.

This is particularly important on smaller construction sites, farms, warehouses, material yards, or manufacturing plants, where the operator often works between buildings, vehicles, racks, or other machinery.

Most common applications of compact telescopic loaders

  • Construction – transporting pallets of blocks, bricks, mortar, or insulation to ceilings and scaffolding; unloading trucks; and transporting materials around the construction site.
  • Agriculture – handling big bags and pallets of fertilizer and feed, loading bulk materials, transporting bales, and performing tasks with a bucket or grapple.
  • Warehouses and storage yards – unloading and loading pallets, especially on uneven or unpaved terrain where a standard forklift may have difficulty maneuvering.
  • Construction and installation companies – moving structural components, pipes, paving stones, roofing materials, tools, or equipment.
  • Paving and land development – transporting pallets of paving stones, soil, aggregate, curbs, and other materials used during the construction project.
  • Industrial and manufacturing plants – transporting components between the warehouse and the outdoor area, handling deliveries, and moving heavier materials.
  • Municipal services and grounds maintenance – work with a shovel, pitchfork, sweeper, or other compatible attachment.

In practice, a compact telescopic loader often proves to be the solution for a user who needs one machine performing many different tasks throughout the day. In the morning, it can unload a truck with materials, later transport pallets, and then work with a bucket.

Example of a well-balanced compact loader

An example of a machine in this category is Zoomlion ZTH2506 – a model that offers an interesting balance between compact size, performance, and an attractive price.

At parameters of approximately 2500 kg lifting capacity and 6 m lifting height The machine works particularly well for small and medium-sized construction sites, in agricultural farms, and everywhere where available space is limited.

It is shorter and more maneuverable than large telescopic loaders in the 7–18 m class, while at the same time offering significantly greater field working capabilities than a classic forklift.

It is precisely this combination of features that makes compact telehandlers so versatile. After all, we do not always need the maximum possible reach. In many companies, the ability to move quickly around the site, work between obstacles, and perform several types of tasks with one machine turns out to be significantly more important.

Agricultural telescopic loaders

Farmers very often choose telescopic loaders in the approximately 3,5 t lifting capacity and 7 m lifting height as versatile machines for everyday farm work.

In practice, this is equipment combining the functions of a loader, a forklift, and partially a tractor equipped with a front loader. In large farms, a telescopic loader can be one of the most frequently used machines, because the list of tasks it performs throughout the year is exceptionally long.

Most common applications of telescopic loaders in agriculture

  • Loading and transshipment of bulk materials – grain, corn, fertilizer, soil, sand, manure, or compost. With the right bucket, the loader works well for filling trailers, spreaders, and feed wagons.
  • Handling of straw and hay bales – lifting, stacking, loading onto trailers and unloading bales. A height of around 7 m is very practical here, as it allows storing bales high up in halls and farm buildings.
  • Handling of pallets and big bags " – fertilizers, seeds, feed or building materials. Pallet forks are among the most commonly used types of attachments, and the telescopic boom allows placing the load further or deeper on a trailer or in a warehouse.
  • Cattle farming work – manure removal, straw bedding, silage loading, feed transport and handling of feed wagons.
  • Work at silos and windrows – loading silage, corn and other materials and loading them into a feed wagon.
  • Loading trailers and trucks – here the telescopic boom offers a significant advantage over a standard front loader, as the operator can more easily reach over a high side and precisely place the material.
  • Warehouse and farm work – moving machines, crates, tanks, parts, building materials, wood or structural components.
  • Seasonal work – harvesting, haymaking, straw collection, feed preparation or fertilization-related work. In large farms, a telescopic loader can work practically every day.

If we look at the frequency of use, it can be assumed that the top three are material loading, bale handling and transport of pallets and big bags.

In livestock operations, silage, feed, and manure.

For this reason, an agricultural loader should be designed not only for lifting. It must also maneuver efficiently between buildings, perform well on unpaved ground, and ensure adequate performance when working with a bucket.

Which telescopic loader for agriculture?

A universal agricultural loader typically features the following parameters:

  • a lifting capacity of approximately 3500 kg, allowing it to easily handle most pallets, big bags, and bales,
  • a lifting height of approximately 7 m, sufficient for loading high trailers and storing materials,
  • an engine offering a torque of approximately 500 Nm, providing adequate force when working in a pile, with a bucket, or with heavier attachments,
  • a PowerShift gearbox enabling efficient maneuvering and driving at speeds up to 40 km/h,
  • an all-terrain chassis adapted for work on surfaces typical of a farm.

An example of such a loader available in the BAC Polska offer is Zoomlion ZTH3507AG Agri.

However, from a farmer's perspective, the slogan „7 m / 3,5 t” should not be the only key factor.

A very important parameter is also how much the machine can actually lift with the arm fully extended.

For the Zoomlion ZTH3507AG Agri, this is as much as 1200 kg.

This is particularly important when working with big bags, pallets, or material stacked deep inside a trailer. The maximum lifting capacity stated in the specifications does not always tell the whole story about the machine's real capabilities in a specific boom position.

Therefore, when choosing a loader for a farm, it is worth analyzing not only the basic parameters, but also the load chart and the boom's working characteristics.

Telescopic loaders with outriggers

Telescopic loaders equipped with front outriggers are primarily used where it is necessary to place heavy material high and/or far in front of the machine.

Here we most often encounter designs offering around 4 t lifting capacity and 14–18 m lifting height.

Outriggers are particularly important when working with a large outreach. They increase machine stability and allow more efficient use of the telescopic boom's capabilities when placing loads at height or far in front of the front axle.

This is a class of machines very closely associated with construction.

Most common applications

  • Building construction – delivering pallets with blocks, bricks, cement, mortar, insulation and other materials to subsequent floors.
  • Construction of halls and steel structures – transport and positioning of steel elements, sandwich panels or roofing materials.
  • Roofing works – delivering roof tiles, sheet metal, membranes, roof trusses and other materials directly to the work area.
  • Assembly of prefabricated elements – moving lighter concrete elements, lintels, beams or prefabricated structural parts.
  • Formwork and scaffolding – delivering formwork systems and scaffolding elements to higher levels of the building.
  • Logistics centers and large industrial investments – unloading trucks and transporting materials between the storage area and the installation site.
  • Working with a work basket – in machines appropriately equipped and approved for such work, it is also possible to use the platform during selected assembly or maintenance work at height.

Which machines from this class do we recommend?

BAC Polska offers two loaders belonging to this category:

These are very typical construction loaders, designed primarily with handling materials at greater heights in mind.

Their main advantage over smaller telehandlers in the 6–10 m class is the ability to handle several building floors without the need to additionally move materials using a crane.

In contrast, compared to a classic crane, a telescopic loader remains significantly more mobile. The same machine can unload a truck, transport a load across the construction site, and then deliver it directly to the appropriate floor.

It is precisely this multi-functionality that is one of the main reasons for the popularity of large telehandlers on construction sites.

It is also worth noting the difference between machines of the 4 t / 14 m and 4 t / 17–18 m.

On paper, a difference of a few meters may seem insignificant. However, on a construction site, it can completely change the machine's utilization capabilities.

The 17–18-meter variant is chosen much more often for larger projects where it is necessary to deliver materials to the 4. or 5. floor, reach deep into the slab, or work above an existing obstacle.

In this case, therefore, it is not only the lifting height that matters, but also the machine's actual working radius.

Rotating telescopic loaders

Telescopic rotating loaders are machines primarily intended for advanced construction and assembly work.

Manufacturers very often describe them as 3 in 1: telescopic loader + mobile crane + work platform.

This is not just a marketing slogan. The ability to rotate the upper part of the machine by 360° completely changes the way work is organized.

In this class, machines offering around 4,5 t lifting capacity and 18–25 m maximum lifting height.

Of course, there are also larger and more specialized structures on the market, but the 18–25 m range very well shows the typical capabilities of rotating loaders used on construction sites.

Where does the rotating loader have the greatest advantage?

Let's imagine the construction of a hall or a 5–7-story building.

The machine drives to one location, the operator sets up the supports, stabilizes the loader, and can then perform subsequent tasks:

pallet → forks → 4. floor

steel element → hoist → roof

2 installers → basket → facade

Between these operations, there is no need to drive around the building each time or repeatedly reposition the entire machine.

Continuous 360° rotation allows working in multiple directions from a single position.

This is a major advantage especially on crowded construction sites where maneuvering space is limited, and repositioning a heavy machine means losing time and requiring re-stabilization.

Most common applications of rotating telescopic loaders

1. Volumetric construction – definitely one of the most important applications

Rotating telescopic loaders perform very well when transporting and delivering to subsequent floors pallets with blocks, bricks, insulation, panels, roofing materials, formwork, and other components needed during building construction.

With forks, the machine behaves in a certain sense like a very long rough-terrain forklift. At the same time, thanks to the ability to set up on outriggers and rotate the body, it can service a large part of the building without the need for continuous chassis repositioning.

Large construction sites are indeed among the primary working environments for machines of this class.

2. Installation of steel structures and prefabricated elements

By using an appropriate hook, boom, or winch, a rotary loader begins to function as a small, highly mobile crane.

Typical tasks include the installation of hall structures, beams, steel components, prefabricated elements, trusses, roof components, or technological installations.

Such applications are particularly interesting for companies that, during a single project, need both a machine for material transport and a device allowing precise positioning of selected components at height.

This is precisely why rotary loader manufacturers list structural installation and material handling at height as some of the primary applications for this category.

3. Roofs – a very strong application for 18–25 m machines

Roof trusses, roof structures, sandwich panels, membranes, insulation, material packages, or HVAC installation components can be supplied directly to the installation site.

The operator positions the machine on its outriggers, then rotates the superstructure and extends the boom accordingly, instead of maneuvering the entire chassis each time.

On large construction projects, this can significantly streamline the logistics of delivering materials to the roof.

4. Facades, windows and glass

With appropriate attachments, the machine can be used to deliver facade panels, sandwich panels, windows, and other facade components.

In this type of task, horizontal reachproves to be very important, not just the maximum lifting height.

The machine can, after all, stand at a specific distance from the building, while the load must be delivered to a specific point on the facade.

This is why, when choosing a rotating loader, it is worth analyzing the full load chart and the available boom reach, rather than just the maximum height stated in basic technical data.

5. Installation work at height

Air conditioners, ventilation units, ducts, pipelines, industrial installations, electrical installations or support structures – these are just more examples of components where a telescopic rotating loader can prove very useful.

The option to use a work basket additionally allows the same machine to be used to lift people, tools and essential equipment to height.

As a result, one carrier can perform several different stages of work.

6. Work platform

After mounting a suitable platform, the loader can replace a telescopic or articulated lift in specific applications.

This is particularly useful when a company needs a machine for transporting heavy materials anyway, and at the same time periodically has to carry out work involving people at height.

The ability to configure it as a telehandler + winch + work platform is one of the most important advantages of the entire category of rotating loaders.

Of course, when using the machine for lifting people, appropriate equipment, configuration and approval of the machine and attachments for the specific type of work remain crucial.

What interesting new products have appeared on the market in this class?

Rotating loaders from Zoomlion have also joined the offer on the Polish market, and they are increasingly being seen on large construction sites and industrial facilities.

These are the models:

These are machines that fit into the segment of equipment designed for demanding construction and assembly work, where range, rotation capability, and the ability to use various types of attachments are important.

The introduction of such models expands the choice for companies that are no longer looking solely for a classic telehandler, but for a machine capable of performing several functions within a single project.

Summary – which telescopic loader to choose?

There is no single telescopic loader that will be the best for every application.

Compact models are an excellent choice wherever compact dimensions, maneuverability, and the ability to perform many everyday tasks matter.

Agricultural loaders in the approx. 3,5 t / 7 m class are instead designed as universal machines for year-round farm maintenance – from pallets and big bags to bales, silage, or bulk materials.

Large telescopic loaders with outriggers show their capabilities primarily on construction sites, where material needs to be delivered high up, far out, and to upper floors.

Meanwhile, rotating loaders take things to the next level, combining the capabilities of a classic telehandler, a mobile crane, and – with the right configuration – a work platform.

The final choice therefore depends on the specific application, type of work to be performed, required height and reach, available space, surface type, attachments used, and of course the planned budget.

This is exactly why it is worth relying on the expertise of professionals who work with many different machines on a daily basis and help users select equipment suited to actual working conditions, rather than just the values listed in a catalog.

The BAC Polska technical advisory team is at your disposal. We will help you select the optimal telescopic loader for the nature of the work to be performed, the required parameters, and the conditions in which the machine will operate.

It is also worth keeping one more thing in mind.

The typical application of a given class of loader is not a rigid rule.

A machine most often used in construction can also perform very well in a large agricultural farm. For example, a 14-meter telescopic loader can be useful in large warehouse facilities or for high material stacking.

On the other hand, a typical agricultural loader can successfully operate on a construction site, in a material yard, or in a manufacturing plant.

Therefore, the most important thing is not which marketing category a specific model is assigned to, but whether its actual parameters, boom characteristics, dimensions, chassis, and available attachments match the tasks the machine will perform every day.

And that is exactly where you should best start your selection.
